MEDICAL AND HEALTH INFORMATION FOR LAYFOLK

Instructions for Patients on acquiring information relevant to their
concerns from the Internet:
While patients and their well-wishers usually google their queries, we recommend
that you use the word "WebMD" as a keyword in addition to your search terms. There
are several other sites providing medical information meant for layfolk that you can
access from search engines, especially if your search term is specific for particular
diseases, but the sites will be of varying quality.
Even with WebMD, we recommend that you merely treat the information given
there only as a kind of bench-mark. In all times and conditions, and especially
in difficult cases, it is best to obtain the final opinion on prognosis and treatment
from your own physician or surgeon. At all times, we strongly advise you
AGAINST using WebMD, or any other site, for the purposes of self-medication;
and emphasise that the best treatment for your problem can commence only
AFTER evaluation by your physician or surgeon.
Indeed, please remain advised that some patients get unduly alarmed by reading
information on their ailment, especially when it implies an uncertain prognosis. Your
actual condition and prognosis may well be much healthier than the implications in the
text. For this very reason your personal medical advisor provides the best opinion on
your health and prognosis.
